Schoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions (Review)

H&C starts out with “Sacrilegious”, a deep track in which Q seems to be looking back upon his life in the streets and questioning whether God will forgive him or not. The song rides on a bass filled Rune Rask instrumental and features mesmerizing Kendrick Lamar vocals. (Official Sacrilegious Video)
The next track to stand out is the Ab Soul featured “Druggys Wit Hoes Again”. When TDE artists collab things tend to get crazy, this track is a perfect example. We all agree that the first Druggys Wit Hoes is better, but Q and Ab both delivered solid verses. Plus, we may have found the anthem for 2012 “Marijuana, hydro, pussy ho, ass, titties, marijuana, hydro, pussy ho, ass, titties, ass, titties, pussy ho, ass, titties, marijuana, hydro, pussy ho, ass, titties.”
A few tracks later is “Hands on the Wheel” featuring A$AP Rocky. With Lissie’s “Pursuit of Happiness” cover paired up with raw drums, Q and A$AP deliver the energetic vibe that we came to expect after “Brand New Guy” featured on A$AP’s breakout tape “LiveLoveA$ap”
In the smoothest track on the album, “Groovline Pt 1” featuring Dom Kennedy and Curren$y, Q speaks on putting his rap persona to the side in order to get close to a girl he is interested in. The track is refreshing, giving listeners a break from the mostly hype vibe of the earlier tracks.
The album ends on an incredible note with “Blessed” featuring Kendrick Lamar (and also a short appearance from Ab Soul). Q delivers a positive message most specifically delivered towards those living the street life. As usual Kendrick takes the track to the next level with his unorthodox flow.
Overall the album is exactly what you would expect a year after Setbacks.
